Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior.

Vajpayee did his early education from Gwalior and then obtained MA and LLB degrees from Vikram University.

Vajpayee started his political career in 1951 with Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee.

He was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1957 and then was a member of the Lok Sabha 11 times and Rajya Sabha 2 times.

Vajpayee took over as External Affairs Minister in the Janata Party government in 1977.

Vajpayee made an important contribution in converting Bharatiya Jana Sangh into Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980.

Vajpayee held the post of Prime Minister three times in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

Vajpayee was also a talented writer and poet. He wrote many books and poetry collections, such as 'Meri Akyavan Kavitayan', 'Nayi Disha Mein', 'Chosen Poems' and 'Antarman Ke Dwar Par'.
